Understanding South African Dividend Withholding Tax (DWT) and the UK-South Africa Double Taxation Agreement (DTA) can help you save on taxes. South African companies typically withhold 20% DWT on dividends, but as a UK tax resident, you’re entitled to a reduced rate of 10% under the DTA.

To benefit from this reduced rate, you need to notify the South African companies you hold shares in to apply the 10% rate. If you’ve had DWT withheld above this rate, you can apply for a refund with proof of your UK residency. A Certificate of Residence from HMRC is the best document to support your claim.
